The Devils only used this arm font in the 1987-88 season when they wore Air-Knit in the regular season. The wear is all organic except for the brown discoloring on the back 1. Verbeek did wear a size 48 in other years including the confirmed example of his 1991-92 Whalers road jersey.
While New Jersey wore Air-Knit during the regular season, it’s well known that the Devils were very frugal with their jerseys. In fact, they were such cheapskates that they gave Scott Stevens a “Christmas” green and red jersey with vinyl customization for use during the 1992 preseason, which was the first year they switched to the red/black color palette, so it is more than conceivable that they would use this pre-1987 Cosby jersey for preseason use.
